Dog of the Week: French Bulldog

  1. Despite their misleading name, these dogs don’t actually hail from France. French Bulldogs actually have English history. During the Industrial Revolution, many English artisans moved to France in search of new work opportunities. They brought their dogs with them, and the breed’s popularity exploded in their new home, earning them their name. 
  2. There was a French Bulldog on the Titanic. In fact, this pup was actually a prize-winning show dog, worth more than $20,000 today. 

3. French Bulldogs’ popularity peaked in the 1900’s and is on the rise again. These small dogs are the 11th most popular dog in the U.S. today, and are continuing to gain ground.

4. Their ears come in two shapes- “rose” ears that fold over, or “bat” ears that stick straight up. However, bat ears are more common with the breed.

5. French Bulldogs can’t swim, so if you take a beach vacation, make sure to keep a close eye on your pup or get them a life vest!

6. This breed is very popular with celebrities. Lady Gaga, Hilary Duff, Leonardo DiCaprio and many others have taken a liking to these little dogs.
